We lost our house
Sunday morning, a fire started in our garage that took nearly our entire house within an hour. Everything is gone. The firefighters were able to rescue our kitties and neither my husband or I was hurt. That makes this bearable. We are still in the early stages of accepting this but I am wondering as we start dealing with the insurance company if there is any advice that will help ensure we can find a way to not get screwed over.

Re: We lost our house
My brother's house burned down last year. They didn't have records stored in a different location about what they owned (who does? I keep MEANING to do it), so they spent hours at my house online looking for similar items to what they remembered they had in order to present a claim to the insurance company.
I'm glad your're OK. Didn't you just recently move into that house?

That really is horrible.
How did the fire start? Do you have records on what you own? Have you contacted the insurance company?

Oh My!
Oh Nanny, I feel so bad for you.
Of course, I am thankful that everyone is alright.
My wife and I both have fires in our past. It feels just like a death in the family.
I wish I could help you with the insurance. Perhaps you should ask around locally for a good lawyers name, just in case.
Also, when you rebuild, try to stay away from Jim Walters. A good Norris or Fleetwood is built better.
(To the MAF: Nanny is in Tennessee. She knows what I'm talking about)
Stay strong.
Keep us posted. Let us know how it's going.
I'm sure we would all do whatever we can to help. Just ask.

Re-establishing identity: Get birth certificate, driver's license, social security card, bank account info, credit card info. You should probably call the relevant offices.
You can cancel your landline telephone and other utilities. Cancel your internet, probably. Get a Google Gmail account or other free email.
Decide what address your snail mail should be forwarded to.
Call the Red Cross or Salvation Army.
Regarding the insurance company, get a copy of the policy and make a few copies, --> enlarged.
Good luck.

Re: We lost our house
Insurance company advice:
Well this is kind advice for next time, which hopefully there wont be. Generally you are supposed to keep a list, and photos of all major, important, and expensive items. And usually on that list you should keep a current price of REAL replacement cost. Because even though you pay potentially thousands of dollars in insurance yearly. They don't care, they will try and get off as cheap as possible, especially if you can't prove you had it. And generally it's good to keep this list, and photo's in a fireproof box, Also within this box should be ID stuff. like Birth Certificate, name change papers, voters registration, bank account info, and even non ID like Social Security cards, etceteras; keep it by the door(some place safe, but easy to access), and/or a duplicate at a friends, family, or neighbors house.

Re: We lost our house
That sucks. I hope you have a place nearby to go to (family, friends) while you deal with this. Unfortunately I'm in college and know nothing about real life so I can't help there. But I'm feeling quite compelled to go around my neighborhood when I get back from school and inform them that they should have pictures and records of all of their stuff, and even offer to do it for them.
Best of luck for the future. Hope everything goes smoothly with the insurance company.

My condolences. Keep talking to one another, it's so easy to let the anger and fear build up inside of you. Keep each other sane and grounded. Especially when dealing with the insurance company.

Re: We lost our house
Sorry
This isn't even close to your situation, but some kids burned down my sisters shed. Her husbands Harley was in there as well as thousands of dollars of tools. The Harley was a Special Edition and also had a lot of add ons. They did not have any receipts but luckily I took a picture of the bike with my daughter on it a month before the fire - it was their only picture. They used the picture to get the full price of the bike (it showed it was in excellent shape as well as some of the add ons).
My advice would be to find as many casual pictures taken at your home by friends and relatives (ask them to look) which hopefully shows things of value that you can use to advocate for replacement value.
Good luck!

Re: We lost our house
A big bit of advice my dad gave his brother when half of his house burned down (my dad works in insurance): DON'T let public adjusters talk you into anything. They are like ambulance chasers, and they follow the firetrucks, and they might show up while the ashes are still warm. Deal with your insurance company ONLY, and if the insurance company leaves you high and dry, only then might it be a good idea to go to somebody else to work with your claims.

I know how a fire can change a life. My only experience is when my dad's business caught fire. We were lucky it didn't do more damage than burn up one machine, but it took weeks to get things back together. A home is a million times worse. I am glad your and your family are safe, I will keep you in my prayers so you can find a new place quickly and easily.

Re: We lost our house
Wow. I'm sorry for your loss. I jokingly say that I pray for my house to burn down (so I can collect the insurance on the wreck), but honestly I don't know what I'd do if I were in your shoes and it actually happened.
My mother-in-law used to work for State Farm in Iowa; I'll give her a call after my final exam tonight and ask her advice. I mention she's in Iowa because we've found that some of the finer details of dealing with insurance companies vary from state to state, but the general guidelines should be the same.
