What happened here... hacked?
Hi
after wakeup, the screensaver didn't accept my password.. i tried to change user but the password was also not accepted. Of course i was scared that someone has taken over my machine (root kit etc).
But after a cold reboot, the machine was up and running again... checking the logs showed me the following
May 8 12:29:41 mymachine DirectoryService[84]: socket(PF_ROUTE) failed: Too many open files
repeated many times.
In my oppinion, this "too many files" stuff blocked me from logging in again..
Has anyone encountered the same problem, or has anyone an idea?

I once came back to my dorm room to find that I couldn't log into my computer at all, even after rebooting. I ended up having to reset the password with the install disks (which I fortunately had with me). I still have no idea what happened; I didn't see anything suspicious in the logs, so if somebody did mess with my computer, they covered their tracks well.

??? I'm puzzled?
How could somthing like that happen.
My old machine usta do this frequently.
It was rev 1 B/W G3.
I thought it was the crappy mobo telling the drive to act up.
It's one of the reasons I replaced it with the mini.
Mac Mini G4 1.25Ghz
160 GB Hard Drive
1 GB R.A.M.

I have seen it happen numerous times before. I think it is a bug in OS X.
As for the B&W G3 - the rev As have a faulty IDE controller, which causes data corruption.
Apple never acknowledged the problem, but you can avoid it by using a PCI IDE card.
