iPods
I remember back in the day a top of the line iPod came with a dock, firewire cable, remote and earbuds. I just got a new 60 GB sexyPod and when I opened it I was appalled to find iPod, ear buds and... a USB 2.0 cable. What the hell? I am glad I had my 10 GB from a few years back and still have a firewire cable, as opposed to dropping $40 for one. But why is this, what is the benefit of USB 2.0 over firewire, to me, it makes no sense.

Re: iPods
The good news is that Firewire cable is "only" $19, not $40. Of course since all CURRENT Macs come with USB 2.0, it "only" affects us poor saps who have earlier Macs.

Re: iPods
I still think Apple sells most of their ipods to windows users. It's been their gateway drug to the Mac world for awhile and I guess they had to make it more attractive to the wintel inclined.

Re: iPods
That pisses me off just thinking about it. Moses, do you have a pre-USB 2.0 Mac like me? Uploading music with USB 1.1 would be so painful! I think bluetooth is faster than that now!
This is kinda related, but my 3G iPod came with a really really long FW cable, and my mini came with a shorter one. No reason. Both FW.

Re: iPods
No, I have USB 2.0, but yeah, I have a 3G FW cable that is more than twice as long as the new USB. Okay, $20 for a Firewire cable? Holy smurfy.

Re: iPods
Unfortunately this is probably a case of Apple catering to the largest user base, Windows users. Betcha most of 'em don't have FiWi, just USB. And if they only have USB 1.1, it's not like they would notice the difference anyway.

Now..now. You gotta be nice to the disadvantaged. Just because they use windows doesn't mean they won't come around eventually. Besides if they have an ipod they have a foot in the door already.

Re: iPods
Margins, margins, margins. Apple is a company trying to make a profit.
And I paid 500 dollars for a 1st gen iPod, you know, before the whole smurfing world thought they were cool. Compared to my last iPod, which had 4 times the capacity at 200 bucks less in price.
You have an absolutely breath-taking... heiney. I mean, that thing's good. I wanna be friends with it.

I don't know why you'd want to use a firewire cable with the new video iPod. Like the Nano, it can charge over firewire, but it won't sync.

Re: iPods
All in all, I don't see what the big deal is.
I'm glad they ditched firewire. Eliminating firewire helps to slim the case down. Moreover, the lack of a firewire cable and a firewire controller saves money. Firewire is significantly more expensive then USB 2. That gives Apple the ability to explore other components, such as a larger high resolution LCD with a wide viewing angle.
And firewire isn't really necessary for the iPod. USB2 is a master / slave setup, while firewire devices can allow devices to network and communicate with each other. The iPod doesn't really need that level of connectivity. It's a not a DV camera.
You can't boot off the new iPods... but, who cares. Not a lot of people do that, and prolonged usage shortens the life of the tiny harddisk.
Ohh, and a Mac compatible USB 2 card is only $12.

Precisely, against your will... but do you go around to every mac user you see and say to them "Macs SUCK!", whilst prancing around thinking your all that with an iPod in your hand?... I'd think not, considering that you are on a mac forum.
I'm referring to the Windozers who DO exhibit the aforementioned behaviour...
