Barbara Bush: Refugees are better off homeless

Accompanying her husband, former President George H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, "This is working very well for them."

The former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on American Public Media's "Marketplace" program.

She was part of a group in Houston today at the Astrodome that included her husband and former President Bill Clinton, who were chosen by her son, the current president, to head fundraising efforts for the recovery. Sen. Hilary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama were also present.

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

Classy. Now we know where George Jr. inherited his indifference to the suffering of the common man. How completely disconnected from the reality of middle- to lower-class living would you have to be to think that camping in a stadium amongst 15,000+ other recently-homeless refugees is an improvement?

it just goes to show how out of touch a small segment of america is.

unfortunately, this small segment has ALL the power in this country.

Sick. I mean, just seriously sick. You have to be mentally sick to be that out of touch with the way it is.

How do you manage so much posting time from the picket lines?  Are you wireless, Schnicky? big_smile

Damn, they need to get you guys back to work.  Football without commentators just creeps me out, and I will go absolutely wobbly if they dont have any personalities around for the start of the NHL season!

On topic: Barbara must be getting a little senile... it is astounding that anyone could say that and not realize how incredibly ignorant they are being.

As a matter of fact, I haven't picketed in quite some time ... my back's out, so I'm laid up, lying on my stomach with my Powerbook in front of me. No cable TV, no newspaper subscription, so little to do but watch movies, TV shows, chat and of course peruse MiniThink, all courtesy my li'l aluminum buddy. Oh, and I'm playing a monster game of CivIII.

Look at the last sentence of the quote at the top of the thread.  Basically, it is an implication that these people are doing better now than they were back home.  And that isnt really reading anything into it, as far as I am concerned.  How would you interpret that comment, that wouldnt make Babs look like an evil aristocrat?

Re: Barbara Bush: Refugees are better off homeless

This is not all that new, attitude wise.  Back in her husband's administration, Mrs. Bush boasted about one of the things she does to help the poor.   She collects the mniature soaps, toothpastes, etc., from hotel rooms and donates them to charity.  Not very impressive, methinks.  Embodies the notion that losers don't deserve much.

Underlying much of what is being said about the evacuees is the stereotype that they don't work.  Even some white liberals* keep repeating it.  Most poor people work.   The Census data for the areas Hurricane Katrina damaged worst in New Orleans says unemployment for able-bodied adults is 4.5 percent.  About half of them also owned their homes.   The value of the homes is low compared to wealthy suburbs like Metairie.  But, the stereotype that Barbara Bush and others have in their heads is again not accurate.

Not surprising, considering that too many white liberals' opposition to racism is a figment of their imaginations.

sometimes its fun to remember that elites are also a minority.  one that is too powerfull and bears the symptoms of it.

she could of said "let them eat cake."  however, i do think her comments were directed at praising texan hospitality... and not that the "underpriviledged" were lucky to find a new trough to slurp from.

Why wouldn't it last?  Of course, maybe due to logistics.

True, but hopefully, this will be an extenuating circumstance.

A)  I love football and hockey without commentators  The CBC should seriously consider doing that full time.  It would save a bundle, and it is "almost like being there".

B) Do you get WCB benefits for picket line back injuries?

C) Can't you guys just hammer this out?  I am not the world's biggest CBC fan, but I am really tired of continual easy listening Can-Con every time I do flip the dial that way.

OK, back on topic...
