Downloading Music

I'm new to macs and want to download music, but kazaa doesn't have an OSX version.  Where is the best place to download music, especially for free.  The apple music store doesn't work in Canada, so that's out of the question.  Thanks for the help.

We're not allowed to talk about stealing music in these forums.

I know you pay a tax on blank media, etc, in Canada, but rules are rules.

Re: Downloading Music

Use the iTunes Music store.  It's leagle and, plus, we won't get yelled at by the mods.

Agent Buckwald said "especially for free," not "only for free," so clearly isn't talking just about stealing (especially since there are even places one can legally download music for free, although the selection and/or quality aren't likely to be particularly good). Buckwald might not be asking about "stealing" at all, in fact.

Which is the only reason this thread remains open.

I think the emusic, new Napster and other similar sources are your best bet.  Try a google search.

Oops.  My bad.  I read over the post too quick and missed that point.  Sorry.

Re: Downloading Music

The music store will be open for Canada soon, //crosses fingers//  Till then, use Direct Connect for legal public domain music downloads.

Re: Downloading Music

if you're into techno trance whatever, try http://www.cygneticrecords.com/

and if you're into music from games, there's remixes of such at http://www.ocremix.org/

as for p2p apps, there's several, but you've probably heard of Limewire before, which is the one I use occasionally. There's a few more supported and semisupported p2p protocals... give http://www.versiontracker.com a search for "file sharing" or something of the like.

i got a significant amount of ocremix songs off of limewire (a little over 200), but i had nearly that many in incomplete downloads before I decided that I had reached the threshold of diminishing returns for limewire in that area. Kazaa is a lot better about that kind of thing than limewire, so it might annoy you to death.

Re: Downloading Music

Thanks.  Ya, I wasn't just talking about free stuff.  I'd love to use the itunes music store, but I suppose I'll wait 'till it's available in Canada.  The new Napster store is also promising.  Thanks for the help.

Re: Downloading Music

Is it just me, but I'm pretty sure I've seen on the Napster site that it's Windows only, as it uses WMA and WMP 9?

Re: Downloading Music

according to the napster site http://www.napster.com/ , it's windows 2000/xp only, requiring wimp 7.1 or later and ie 5.01 or higher. they don't say if they're subject to the same kind of licensing problems that have, so far, made itms usa-only.

Re: Downloading Music

if you want to try some random music...

on google, search for "mp3 index"

it ususally just sends you to a server index where people hold all their MP3's

I don't advise downloading copyrighted content, but the Kazaa network has its uses. There is an application called Neo that will allow you to access the Kazaa network. The cool thing is you can only download. Thus in a way protectes you from accidentally distributing protected materials. You can get Neo at the link below.

http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~mthole/neo/index.html

I personally get most my Music online from the iTunes Music Store. There are still a multitude of music that you can legaly download over Kazaa or Limewire. Just navigate it carefully and not download copyrighted material.

Re: Downloading Music

go to the bands website, and see if they offer downloadable songs?
i Know clutch (www.pro-rock.com) had an entire live set (80+ minutes) avalable to download.  several other bands i know have singles, demos, or lots of music (not just clips, but entire songs) you can download.  Direct from the horse's mouth, and totally legit/legal. up

Re: Downloading Music

Hey, www.mp3.com is still around, and they offer both downloadable and streaming music (.m3u or whatever).  And it's all legal!

Poisoned is the best app for music.  Free music.  That's legal.  We know you won't abuse the power.  :-)

Search for poisoned if you want a real good p2p app (Open FT, FastTrack and gnutella search in one app).

Acquisition is another great p2p program.  Lots of legal stuff on there.
