iPod internal docking bay...
Well, I finally realized it was time for me to get an iPod, and it's been great, and it's sorta restored the use for my G4 350, which runs great but has had it's drives canabalized for a faster work PC (can't exactly afford a new G5). Anyway, I remembered that it, for some reason, has an internal firewire port which I'd never dreamed of using, and with a couple quick modifications, I've got an internal iPod docking bay where my dvd rom used to be. just pull down the hatch and there she is, recharging soundly...

Slick. I've been working on building something like that, but as a car receiver type thing which is hooked into the car's audio system. Then you just plug your iPod in (like putting a tape in) and play your tunes in your car. No FM transmitter, audio cables, or anything like that necessary.

Someone did that before, only I forget what kind of G4 case they used. I want to say a Quicksilver case, but I'm not sure if that's right.

I've got an iPod bay in my drive tower, but it isn't very sophisticated.
Pull off the faceplate, and there's a few inches of FireWire carble inside one of the 3.5" bays, that's all. Did you do the same thing as me, or build a custom recharge channel like that other guy?

I've been thinking of the same thing. We need to get cracking on that.

Re: iPod internal docking bay...
I have found 3 references to the docking bay in a tower, and they all lead here...
http://homepage.mac.com/johnhuber2/PhotoAlbum2.html
but that is a dead link, and I couldn't find anything current.
I'll keep looking though.

Re: iPod internal docking bay...
Ill try and track down that link, if it still exists. I saw this about 6 months after the release of the original 5GB iPod.

Ok...we need a car receiver unit, a bunch of cables, circuit boards, and other spare parts (just in case), a spare iPod dock-connector-FireWire cable to splice into the power system, and a spare iPod dock to rip apart and put into the receiver so that you can hook the iPod in. Then we need to build the iPod remote right into the unit so you can actually change songs and stuff...
It would be even better to design some sort of software which actually interfaces with the iPod, allows you to control it via the buttons on the car's stereo, and actually see the names of the songs on an LCD...but that would take a lot of work.

Re: iPod internal docking bay...
That looks kinda ghetto. For those of you with MDDs, hold your iPod up to the front, see? It would just fit vertically in there. You would loose all use of your DVD and CD drives though.
