Sirius Satellite Radio enabled Apple iPo
Sirius Satellite Radio Chief Executive Mel Karmazin met with shareholders yesterday and the subject of a Sirius-enabled Apple iPod was raised.
"One shareholder asked whether Sirius is negotiating with Apple Computer about an a Sirius-enabled iPod, or if it is pursuing such a deal with another maker of MP3 players. 'We've had discussions with everyone,' the executive acknowledged, including makers of cell phones, digital music players and other devices. He said that he'd had dinner Monday night with Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs and other digital entertainment-related executives at a conference," David B. Wilkerson reports for MarketWatch.
"'Will there be MP3 players that include satellite radio? Sure. The technology's easy,' Karmazin added. The issue, he elaborated, is whether such an agreement would cannibalize existing Sirius business, and how much of its $12.95 monthly fee the company would have to split with a manufacturer," Wilkerson reports. "Sirius will ultimately have a portable radio that is comparable to the MyFi radio offered by its rival, XM Satellite Radio, Karmazin assured investors. 'The wearable market is a very small market in radio, and this goes back to the Sony Walkman,' he indicated. 'We have been focusing on the auto market and the home market. ... But we recognize there are customers who want it.'"

Re: Sirius Satellite Radio enabled Apple iPo
Our broadcast radio choices are abyssmal out here. 3 stations: 2 modern country, 1 - well I don't know - either the station owner is constantly breaking in with important local news, like someone blew a tire jumping the curb on main street, so you better find an alternate route, or playing music I didn't know people actually listen to, like mariah carey or, or, oh, how would I know?
I listen to music channels offered by Dishnet which includes the Sirius music channels at home, the variety is astounding. But I for one would really like something that would go from my car - to our truck - to our airstream - to the back patio - to where ever to mood strikes. For that reason, I've been procrastinating getting a Satellite car radio, because so far there isn't one that meets all my needs. A Sirius iPod would just fit the bill.

Both XM and Sirius have modular systems. You get a receiver that connects to an auto adapter and a stereo adapter. As far as I know you can buy as many adapters as you want. You only get billed for your reciever. So you could listen to it in as many autos as you have adapters.
XM has a boombox kit for $100 that you can take anywhere. I don't know if Sirius has something like that or not. Probably does.

If I'm not mistaken, Sirius released theirs before XM, even.

I've been tempted to get satelite radio - but I just can't justify the dough - it's a recurring charge, not a one time purchase.

XM used to be 10 bucks a month. Paying for multiple years could get it down to about $8. That was a good deal. Now it is $13 like Sirius.
If you really, really like music, satellite radio is a good deal. XM puts out some really good playlists particularly. When I listened to XM I was always jotting down artists that were new to me and I really liked. It was an adventure.

Yeah, on the right stations, I was hearing songs I ended up hearing on air-radio 2 months later as the 'new upcoming hit'
like I heard the Killers on XM long before air radio games them any playtime

Mel is full of crap....his company can't even make a decent portable unit (by decent I mean one at all). Give me a break the Xact rego is a turd when set next to the MyFi not to mention the boatload of money they wasted on Stern and Martha Stewart. One is an old woman who annoys the crap out of people and has lost her edge years ago and the other just got out of jail and does cooking shows.

$10.00/mo is $120/year
$13.00/mo is $156/year
What do you have at the end of the year to show for it?
Spending money on entertainment is fine, but same money gets you a decent amount music that is yours to keep if you buy used CD's or are a member of a CD club and buy when the sales happen (what I do). You then own the music and have something to show for it, rather than nothing to show for it.
But if that's how you want to spend your money, that's your business - I don't see it as a particularly good deal, it's a worse deal imho than subscription services like napster (where at least you get to pick what songs you listen to and when)

Re: Sirius Satellite Radio enabled Apple iPo
My Jeep came with a year of free Sirius. I've had the Jeep for three weeks. I activated the free year two days after I got the jeep.
Now I can't stand FM or AM radio.
I really like the comedy station. I can listen to just about any kind of music whenever I want. If I want to listen to talk; It's there.
Sports? Lots of sports. A lot of play by play. I hear that Sirius has the NFL and XM has the MLB. Well, I am a (American)) football fan. Now I can catch all of my team's games.
Sweet.

The whole satelite radio thing would be better if you could use one device to subscribe to stuff on multiple networks - like satelite TV is.
Sounds like if you want both MLB and NFL - you need two pieces of hardware and two subscriptions - hardly elegant.

Re: Sirius Satellite Radio enabled Apple iPo
Another thing that bothers me about satelite radio (and TV) is amber alerts and emegency broadcast system.
I get both on standard TV/Radio - sometimes they are useless, severe thunderstorms and flood warnings in a town over 100 miles away - but sometimes they are very beneficial, especially if family is traveling to see me - Dad doesn't drive as well as he use to, his vision just isn't as good anymore - so if I know there are such warnings, I can call him and let him know (if he doesn't already) that he should find a hotel room and sleep until morning. And amber alerts - they only work if people hear them.

We were talking about that at my work on Friday, and we figure it might not be so hard a fix for satellite radio.
Both XM and Sirius have found out the hard way that their systems only work with a direct line of sight to the orbiting transmitter. In many places, especially urban areas, that is near impossible. So, they have to put in terrestrial based repeaters all over the place. One would think it would be pretty easy to get all repeaters in a X mile radius to respond to an alert and broadcast it for only the affected area. Satellite radio is, rather quickly, going to become less about the satellites and more about these ground repeaters. 1) They are cheaper, and 2) provide a much more reliable signal coverage. So, there is a pretty easy solution.
