I need to buy a pork pie hat!

..and a dark suit with straight trousers (60's style), a button-down shirt and narrow knitted tie.

Just received the dreaded invite to a murder mystery party. Man I hate themed parties. I have two weeks in which to find a costume, but will only be able to shop at the weekends.

I suppose it may be easier to theme than last year's American Gold Rush one, but even so my wardrobe is decidedly lacking in 60's kitsch. So now not only do I get to spend my valuable free time clothes shopping, which is loathsome enough, but I'll now be trapsing around the county's charity shops. Oh sweet joy.

Sounds like all the extra effort could result is a great deal of fun.  Good luck with your wardrobe hunt.

There's never any excuse for a pork pie hat.

Wear a black turtleneck and trousers, with a black woolen cap.  Carry a long, bloody knife.

Buster wore a boater. While it somewhat resembles a porkpie in design, it's made of straw.

A porkpie is made of felt. I have the Buster Keaton collection of all of his silent features, and he wears a boater in all of them.

A porkpie can be made of straw, as can a fedora.

So, are you going as Jake or Elwood? Or Curtiss? Please Say Curtiss - Cab Calloway was one groovy cat. Not sure how you'll fit the Blues Brothers into a murder mystery theme though. I guess that will be a whole new rant.

As Tallgeese notes, a pork pie hat can be made of felt but not exclusively, it can also be straw and other materials. A boater is expected to be made of straw and to be flat-topped and flat-rimmed.

I'll not argue Keaton never wore a boater, he unquestionably did:

But he definitely wore a pork pie as one of his signature hats as evidence by pics running from his early to late career:

Well, yes I could not go, but then I'd miss the party and the opportunity to meet up with former uni friends, many of which I haven't seen in years. I love a good party, but just am not terribly big on ones involving costumes or competitions (aside from drinking contests). I'm sure I'll have a great time, but I'm quite an introvert at heart and will struggle to look forward to this.

However, my own psychological insecurities aside, the "costume" is almost complete. Close scrutiny of my best suit somewhat alarmingly revealed that it matched *almost exactly* the required description (which I think is a cause for concern). I have procured a suitable hat on the Internet -- it arrived at work today, and I must say I look like a total twars in it, but then again I've never owned a hat that suited me. I've secured the loan of a silver tie pin, which basically leaves me needing a button down shirt and a narrow knitted tie. The latter is proving to be somewhat tricky to find, but I haven't given-up hope just yet.

I was speaking to a friend on MSN last night who had just received his invite -- I'm sure this breaks some Murder Mystery protocol, but he revealed to me his character and that he was somewhat displeased with it. He is "cool, camp and collected" and has to wear a tight shirt, flares, a wispy scarf and floppy hat. I had to laugh at that - very glad I was given my character actually.

Re: I need to buy a pork pie hat!

Got halfway home tonight and realised I'd left my hat in its box atop the in-tray on my desk. I bet our cleaner is doing a Mrs Doubtfire routine around the office whilst wearing it RIGHT NOW.

FYI its more of an "iron-shaped" one than rounded, and has two impressions (dents!) on what I presume is the front. It's pretty much all I could find, but I also detested the ones pictured above *so* much, I felt compelled to get something as different as possible, whilst still vaguely matching the description of a pork pie hat.

Re: I need to buy a pork pie hat!

Finally got my hat today... 3 days after the wedding.  mad

Apparently they tried delivering it on Friday, but I never saw any slip of paper telling me so.  I called the company I ordered it from today and they told me.

Anyhoo, it looks cool!

Pix forthcoming...

Heh, I look like a total doofus in mine. That said, I look bad in all hats. Gee, maybe I just look bad?

Perhaps I should throw this open to the forums...

Finally got a pic of me in the hat.  Sorry the quality is so crappy, it's a scan from the local newspaper.
