Re: Looking for some decent games.
Well if you're not too burned out on WWII games...Call of Duty (1 & 2). I never played 1 but really liked CoD2.
I'm duty bound to mention UT2K4.
The single player ladder is fun and instant action with masterful bots will test your FPS abilities. Oh and the new Onslaught game type is a blast!
Half Life 2 EP1 is out with EP 2 coming soon. For $20 to get a few more hours of game play and story. May wanna wait for the EP1 & 2 bundle...if it ever happens.
FEAR
Neverwinter Nights (RPG)
Temple of Elemental Evil (RPG)
MechWarrior 4 bundle

Re: Looking for some decent games.
Look at Company of Heroes (CoH). It's coming out Sept 14(?), and it's a blast to play (If you pre-order the game, you can play in the multiplayer beta). If you took the best parts of Dawn of War and Command & Conqueror Generals, then made it WW2 theme, you'd have CoH. Instead of mining resources, you capture points on the map that generate resources for you. Squad AI is pretty smart, they'll take cover and try to avoid artillery/grenades. The vehicle AI can be a bit stupid at times, but generally it's okay.

I am not big on having to pay a monthly fee to play a game I bought. That's why I hate Steam as well. It can't seem to ever find the damn server so I can play HL2.
From what I have seen of WOW, it doesn't really interest me. Too much time spent dinking around trying to level up your character or get better weapons and armor. I want this:
1) Sit down.
2) Launch Game.
3) Blow the hell out of stuff.
4) Save when I need to and quit. Repeat when time allows.
I don't have large blocks of time free to play. I may have a few minutes in the morning, and a few mid afternoon, and maybe an hour or two at night. I hate having to get to a certain point in the game to save. That's just f'ing wrong.
I plan to look into everyone's suggestions and see what grabs me. My friend also recommended RE 4, and said that it scared him smurf. Unfortunately, my PS2's DVD Rom drive appears to be dying. It wouldn't spin up some of my disks today. I have barely used the damn thing and it has already broken. GRRR! Thanks for all the suggestions thus far!

Valve can fix this for you. Send an email to support stating you're on dial up and Steam never connects. You can play HL2 w/o Steam but it needs Valve's blessing.

Re: Looking for some decent games.
To be honest, most games require then "a few minutes". Blocks less then 30 minutes make most games unbearably slow.
However, I can recommend Doom. Many ports have been made of the source and the game itself can be completed in a half hour entirely if you're speed running it.

Offline Mode works fine for me and I've never talked to Valve.

I liked Deus Ex because it has replay built in. You can make decisions along the way that can drastically change the ending. You can abandon your brother or save him. You can kill Agent Nevara (sp?) or not. You can knock people out or kill everyone. It changes the game noticably. Sure, the combat physics weren't the best, but then compare it to other games of its time. It was pretty good back in the day. Plus the nano augmentations were cool.
PS- If I get any computer games, they will most likely be for the PC. My fastest Mac is a Quicksilver G4 933 with the GeForce 4mx video card and 64mb of video memory. That don't cut it with these modern games. But it's a sweet mac. I envy you.
When I say *bad* combat physics, I mean *unbearably-even-for-its-time-bad* combat physics.
Me: *shoots guy with pistol*
Guy: Hey you! *runs at me*
Me: *shoots five times in the chest*
Guy: *sort of retreats while turning but in the end just goes around in circles*
Me: *shoots several more times*
Guy: *dies*
Well great, but now I've got no ammo.
I swear, every weapon in that game felt so useless. I mean a sniper rifle that required you to get a hit three or four times before bringing anything down, wtf?
Oh well, I guess it's for some. Maybe I'll try and play it again.
You need to get your skill level up. At maximum level, you could almost shoot from the hip and nail someone with one shot with the sniper - best way to take out one of those Commandos (head shot!). I do agree that the AI could be really dumb - but it's not such an easy thing to do to simulate human reactions. I'm amazed at what I see in FPSs.

Re: Looking for some decent games.
Well, so far I have gotten HL2: Episode 1 and loved it. The graphics were awesome, and my vid card was on its knees and begging for forgiveness with everything turned on max. It only lagged a bit when I would look at the Citidel's core or water. Then it would get a bit choppy. Everywhere else was fine. Now to wait for Episode 2! I got Episode 1 at Best Buy for $15 bucks on sale.

Yeah, I guess after pushing a few points onto my "Pistol Skills" stack it's not so bad. As usual though, I'm lost with no idea where to go.

Re: Looking for some decent games.
Everyone's recommending KotOR and Neverwinter, but if you want Bioware's truly great RPGs, you have to go back a few years the Baldur's Gate games (I and II and ToB). Those games (particularly II, which is far more modern than the slightly outdated original) have at least five times the length and depth as KotOR; they just don't have 3d graphics, so everyone looks over them.

I can get into 2D RPG's though. Like that one I tried but was too cheap to buy... about the people who could make dragons and beasts with magic. I think SpiderSoft made it...

Re: Looking for some decent games.
Baldur's Gate II has some of the highest production values I've ever seen in a game. It's certainly not cheap; it could be released today and still garner the same reviews that it got six years ago.
