Your podcast recommendations: American political news
In my (college) government class, we are supposed to keep up with news relating to American political current events. I, however, despise television. Can anyone recommend a daily (or at least updated more than just weekly) podcast about this topic that offers multiple political perspectives? If you're not familiar with podcasts, what about a major news provider that's good about providing multiple political perspectives? Some of those have podcasts.
Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.

I'd like to offer an equally persuasive right-wing podcasting counterpart, but there is none.

Why do you despise television?
They say that the most secure computer is the one not connected to the internet.
That's why security experts recommend Telstra BigPond.

Why not?
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

So, what is it? Left-wing? Libertarian? Moderate? I don't see anything on the website telling that.

I believe he prefers the term "progressive".
But I re-read your first post and it seems as if you're looking for more general political news. Maybe NPR has something like what you're looking for. They have many casts to choose from.

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
I looked at the NPR podcasts, but the one political one I saw was specific to Michigan. I ended up going to iTunes and randomly picking the podcasts of the major news channels. So far, CBS "Face the Nation" seems to be right on the money as far as subject matter.
As I'm not really familiar with the major news networks I'm not knowledgable about their biases, but I'm not noticing a slant. The individual politicians, of course, have their own party's slant, but I don't take their words at face value. I wait for them to interview (either later in the same episode or a couple of episodes later) someone from the opposite side who will counter that person and then sort of mix them both and have some knowledge gained from other sources (such as my professor, etc.) as a tie-breaker. If there is some sort of dramatic bias on the part of CBS I'm missing here, please let me know (seriously). The only issue I have with Face the Nation is that while it seems to be more often than weekly, it's not quite daily. For now at least, I also have the weekly "KCRW's Left, Right, and Center" podcast. I am still open to suggestions, and much thanks to gress for the help so far.
JB, television is not time-shifted unless you have a DVR system such as a TiVo, and I'm not interested in exra expense. I can't lay in bed and rest my eyes while watching television, and I can't take it to school for listening between classes. Plus, there's just too much stupid crap on TV in general. I prefer podcasts by far.

Really? Try going here and checking out 'news', 'politics' and 'nation'. Should be some good stuff in there. Here's one I haven't heard but seems up your alley.
See if you can get a BBC podcast on American politics. Should be interesting to have an international perspective.

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
Yes, I went to that page. Politics only contained one item, and it was specific to Michigan. Nation contains three items, two of which are actually regional; the other one doesn't really cover the topics we bring up in class. I just finished giving News a thorough look, and it has a podcast from the University of Michigan that looks like it could be good (as far as topics are concerned), but I haven't given it a listen yet. Whether or not I keep subscribed to it depends on how local it may be and a noticeable bias (if any), etc.
I actually found and subscribed to the "Left, Right, and Center" podcast already and mentioned it in the post you replied to.
It is indeed up my alley. It and "CBS- Face the Nation" are what I'm currently subscribed to and are dead on. Take a look at the episode titles to get a feel for exactly what sort of topics I'm looking for. The only problem is that the episodes don't come out quite frequently enough. What I'd like is a daily podcast covering the sort of thing these two podcasts cover.
I looked at the various BBC podcasts but couldn't find anything which covered the topics I was looking for.

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
I just skimmed through the Politics category (not the featured ones, but all). I'll have to listen to some of them (I'm about to do this), but I think I finally found a group of podcasts that should work well for me. They are as follows…
ABC News AfterNote: every weekday, but short (less than five minutes). (see edit #1)
CBS News Podcast- Face the Nation: seemingly irregularly updated, but I've listened and I like it.
KCRW's Left, Right, and Center: weekly but balanced. I've listened to and like this one.
Views of the News: weekly discussion of the media, which might help me in not taking everything I hear at face value. (see edit #2)
Edit #1: The problem I have with the ABC podcast is that it has ads. I like the idea of a short but frequent news update though, and can (and will) skip them if it comes down to it.
Edit #2: I like Views of the News.

Unfortunately the Beeb is only offering a very limited list of podcasts (most of their programming can be heard via Real Player, some also through Windows Media Player), and none of these podcasts seem to fit Macskeeball's purpose.
Macskeeball, if you do decide to peruse through the BBC listings, then those that best fit your purposes would be those offered by BBC4 Radio and the BBC World Service.

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
Even if all of those comments about me were correct, my views (which have never really developed because I've never kept up with non-tech news on a regular basis) would still be completely irrelevant to the topic of this thread. What I'm looking for is something frequently updated that covers the type of topics my college government class professor brings up in his lectures so that I will understand what's being talked about. It's as simple as that, and I've pretty much found what I'm looking for as you can see in my previous post.
I followed the Al Franken link but the descriptions of each episode weren't descriptive at all. However, I noticed that the show description said "Al unapologetically takes on right wing politicos…" As I indicated in my posts in this thread, I'm trying to find new sources without major slants in any particular direction.
I like the setup I have now quite a bit except for the fact that one of them has ads. www.macaddict.com/forums/post/1137835#p1137835

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
Washington Week with Gwen Hill. It is a weekly PBS TV program, but it is almost exclusively talking-heads and low on graphics.
NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Another PBS TV program (every weekday). Again you only get the audio feed, but this program is much less dependent on flashy graphics than the major network counterparts.

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
How about searching for podcasts using keywords?
You can try Podzinger (www.podzinger.com)
It lets you search the Internet for podcasts and locate specific information at the exact location of the podcast.
I would try "politics" or "current events"

Re: Your podcast recommendations: American political news
I must say, I really like the podcast selection I now have. Thanks largely to the help I received in this thread, I found a selection that was even better than what I was initially looking for.
-CBS: Face the Nation
-KCRW: Left, Right, & Center
-PBS: NewsHour with Jim Lehrer
-University of Missouri-Columbia: Views of the News
-PBS: Washington Week
