The ProTouch has you and your keyboard covered. Now, go wash your hands.
Portable is where the action is in today’s computer world, but that world isn’t always as clean as we’d like it to be. iSkin’s ProTouch Keyboard Protector is a flexible silicone membrane that fits over your MacBook or MacBook Air’s keyboard to provide a barrier between grime and your portable’s keys. It’s a simple solution that works well.
The ProTouch comes in a variety of translucent colors: pink, blue, green, orange, and the frosted white we tested with our MacBook—and there are models to fit other laptops and Apple’s aluminum keyboards as well. Applying the ProTouch to our keyboard required squishing the membrane between a few keys here and there, but once in place, the ProTouch fit perfectly and stayed put. Happily, the membrane left no marks on the MacBook’s screen when we closed the lid. Microban material helps keeps bacteria and odors at bay, but the ProTouch doesn’t work hygiene miracles. We noticed dust and fibers tended to collect under the membrane’s outer edges over time, and that debris then became trapped beneath the ProTouch. The membrane is easily removable, however, so an occasional cleaning is recommended.
The tactile sensation of the ProTouch takes some getting used to, but we were typing just fine in a few minutes, possibly bearing down on the keys more than usual. The ProTouch feels supple, and we quickly got used to the added traction it provides. While typing on the ProTouch, our MacBook’s unprotected trackpad felt slippery by comparison. The ProTouch also makes an already quiet keyboard even quieter. Some users will miss the audio feedback from tapping naked keys, but we didn’t mind a quieter typing experience. Key legibility was diminished a bit in dim lighting, however, and we had to squint occasionally to read function keys.
