The final release of the iPhone SDK is quickly approaching. As we impatiently await new apps, the Mac|Life staff has been speculating on what apps are already in the works by some of our favorite companies.
We're hoping Sling Media will have a Sling Player ready for the iPhone and that TiVo creates an iPhone app that will simplify online scheduling.
Before we start calling these companies to get the status on their iPhone app development, we decided to ask our readers what company's app they are hoping will arrive soon. Just drop your iPhone app wishes in the comments below and we'll try to get the developer to spill the beans on the likelihood of the app seeing the light of day.
UPDATE: We'll be calling on Thursday, so be sure to have your comment in by late Wednesday night.

App to password protect individual contact records
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2008-04-02 13:17
I'd like to be able to secure certain contact records with a password while having easy and free access to others.
For example I'd like to password protect contact info for my bank or other financial institutions, but have easy access to friend's phone numbers, web surfing, etc.

I would probably most like to see iChat released. They should also redesign the text messaging interface because it too closely resembles iChat on macs.
If iChat or some comparable IM program were to become available for the iPhone, it would have enormous support and likely encourage others to adopt the iPhone. None of the other IM applications work well at all, especially if you are idle for more than a minute and your screen turns off.
I want a fully functional, 24/7 IM program that never goes offline.

Quicken iPhone
Submitted by hho26 (not verified) on Wed, 2008-04-02 14:04
When I used a Palm device, I had PocketQuicken to keep tabs of my debit card, credit card and check writing activities during the day and it sync'ed to my computer's Quicken program.
How about it Intuit? A native iPhone PocketQuicken application.
I have tried Quicken Online and it does not stand up to a native application.

I didn't realize I had an "s" at the end of iPhone. Now it should mean that it's a safari or hunt for iPhone applications.

There is... it's called 1password. Visit 1password.com.
I use it all the time. It's awesome. However I'd like it to be a true application on the iPhone, not just an applet in the browser.

if this is for what web apps exist that we'd like to see be made native
I'd say Bejeweled, Frenzic, Lumina, an IM program, video would be nice
and other things we need
COPY & PASTE
landscape keyboard in ALL typing apps
search function in contacts
smart to do list that syncs with calendar and highlights dates and events in texts and emails
notes sync
iWorks if it can just play and Keynotes and display Number fine as long as we can create, edit, and sync docs on Pages
I think some folks are missing the point here

I'm pretty sure the idea isn't what new features you'd like to see Apple implement on the iPhone. It is what third party apps you'd like to see. No Apple-sanctioned third party developer is going to be able to add cut-and-paste, accelerometer support, or printing to existing iPhone apps. The iPhone SDK doesn't even allow apps to operate in the background. It sure as heck isn't going to allow apps to modify the way other apps run.
Want for iPhone

There is a whole bunch of stuff my Treo (as flawed as it is) does much better than iPhone. SDK and software V2 will be a huge step forward.
Games: Scrabble, Bejeweled, Bowling.
PDA Utilities: A really good calendar / to do list (like DateBook for Palm).
Productivity Apps: Versions of Word and Excel (like what DataViz offers on Palm).

I mean it's a multimedia device right, so what's up?!?!?!?! All this compatible with imovie, iphoto and idvd. I mean the nokia n95 has it and they aren't the only ones!!

I don't have an iPhone yet
Submitted by Ray Hedrick (not verified) on Thu, 2008-04-03 20:10
I don't have an iPhone yet but when I do, I want an unabridged dictionary that does not depend on the internet. Random House Websters produces a fairly good one, but I'm not sure it's available for the iPhone. Internal memory required is about half a gig, I believe.
Another thing I will want is to rapidly look up trivia through google. I think that option already exists.
A third app I need is Crossword Compiler. I'm a crossword constructionist and this ap gives me a media-ready crossword, among other things.
Thanks.

ability to use itunes from more than one computer to sync. i have 3 macs and they don't all have the same music on them... the drives on 2 of them are way too small for that. what a pain that my whole library gets wiped out if i want to add a song from the wrong one.
A grocery list from A Cook's Book (ACBK)
Submitted by Terre Spencer (not verified) on Mon, 2008-04-07 17:45
This great recipe-management application creates a shopping list and I want it on my iPhone! And I want to be able to see my recipes on my iPhone—whose name is iRis after the Greek Goddess of communication. If I see an especially plump mound of blueberries in the produce section, I want to be able to scan my ACBK recipes to see what I might want to make with them…and, of course, to see what other ingredients I'll need to complete the recipe(s).
The developer, Tony Cate, is conscientious and responsive. Anyone who enjoys cooking and their iPhone really should have the ability to sync the shopping list from their computer to iPhone for shopping trips.
I know that there are some browser-based lists out there for the iPhone, but reception is not so great inside many stores. Even with the best of reception, there are no recipes with me in the store.
I waited for over five years for Apple to release the iPhone and now it is time to pair the abilities of the wondrous iPhone with the magnificent ACBK.
In anticipation,
Terre Spencer

Also, I want to be able to send pics to my friends cell phones. Every other phone can do these... I don't understand why its more difficult for iphones...
